The Fort Gregg-Adams MWR office typically runs special Independence Day programming including outdoor movie nights, pool parties, and family activities. Check the MWR website or stop by the community center for details. The Chesterfield County Fairgrounds celebration is just a short drive and offers one of the biggest fireworks displays in the region — with free admission and parking, it is one of the most budget-friendly options for families. The Star-Spangled Squirrels Fest at CarMax Park is also an excellent option — the ballpark atmosphere combined with No BS! Brass Band and fireworks is hard to beat. And don't miss the early fireworks at Hopewell's Fireworks on the Appomattox on June 27 if you want to get a head start on the celebrations.

Planning Tips for July 4th Weekend
Arrive early for fireworks
Most fireworks shows start at dusk (around 9:15–9:30 p.m.) but the best viewing spots fill up 1–2 hours early. For the Star-Spangled Squirrels Fest, gates open at 5 p.m. with on-field access until 8:30 p.m. — go early to enjoy the full experience.
Plan your parking
The CarMax Park and Chesterfield Fairgrounds events are the largest and attract the biggest crowds. For CarMax Park, consider ride-share or arriving well before gates open. The Chesterfield celebration offers free parking on the fairgrounds. Colonial Williamsburg parking fills fast — arrive in the afternoon if you want to explore the historic area before the evening show.
Bring noise protection for little ones
Fireworks can be startling for toddlers and young children. Bring noise-canceling headphones or ear protection. The Goochland and New Kent celebrations are less crowded and may be gentler introductions for young kids.
Stay hydrated — it will be hot
Virginia in early July is typically 90°F+ with high humidity. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, hats, and cooling towels. Most outdoor events have concessions but water sells out fast. The Chesterfield, CarMax Park, and Colonial Williamsburg events all have food and drink vendors on site.
Leave pets at home
Fireworks are extremely stressful for dogs and cats. Keep pets secured indoors with background noise (TV, fan, or white noise machine) on July 3 and 4. Most public event venues do not allow pets during fireworks events.
